DESIGNING A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE
Waste-to-energy plants are still viewed as facilities a city tolerates, not welcomes. Yet some are becoming landmarks, education centres and public spaces. SUS ENVIRONMENT was among the first to design them that way, shaping each project around the local landscape and culture.
By Helena Nageler-Petritz

Close your eyes for a moment and think about a typical waste-to-energy plant. Does it have an artistic facade and a golden ball decorating its chimney? A honeycomb exterior? An undulating silhouette? A ski slope on its roof? Probably not.
The public's traditional image of a WtE facility is, in the best case, functional, unassuming and slightly ugly and in the worst case, dirty, disorderly and smelly. But here's the question: If a WtE plant is to operate in a city for decades, must it remain an industrial facility that residents simply have to accept? What if architectural design is not mere "packaging" for a WtE project but an important interface connecting environmental infrastructure with the city, communities and the public?
FROM INDUSTRIAL FACILITY TO URBAN LANDMARK
There are already some examples of exactly that. Spittelau WtE plant in the heart of Vienna, Austria, was planned by artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser, who was famous for his amorphous, colourful design. CopenHill in Denmark's capital, Copenhagen, turns its roof into a ski slope combined with public amenities such as walking trails, climbing and viewing areas. These are industrial plants that do not need to be hidden but rather want to be seen.
SUS ENVIRONMENT, a leading global provider of comprehensive environmental services, has taken this global trend of deindustrialised WtE design to heart. But while companies often rely on a standard architectural template, the Shanghai-based business decided from the outset to abandon that approach and instead develop designs responding to local natural settings, culture and urban identity, giving each city its own WtE architectural expression, from the honeycomb elements of the Liuzhou Project to the sails of the Xinhui Project.
"Every city has its own distinctive character and cultural identity. We do not want to replicate the same WtE plant in different places. Instead, we aim to create a unique connection between each facility and the city it serves, shaping spaces where infrastructure and communities can coexist in harmony. With advanced technology ensuring optimal waste-to-energy performance, we also take into account the natural environment, cultural memory and community context, designing a sustainable future tailored to each city," said Liu Heng, Head of Brand and Sustainability at SUS ENVIRONMENT Group.
The list of domestic and international architecture and design honours for the projects is long and includes the China Construction Engineering Luban Prize, Paris Design Awards and Architizer A+ Awards.
